Overview

The MA Childhood and Youth Practitioner is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary programme that works at the intersection of childhood and youth development. It is designed to offer students a broader underpinning knowledge of children and young people in a variety of theoretical and practical contexts. Specifically, the programme draws upon historical and contemporary ideas and explores children and young people through education, social policy, youth practice and personal reflective biographies. You will learn in our recently redeveloped £18 million Parson’s building with access to a range of study support services. Our teaching staff are vocationally experienced having worked in sector for many years. You will also learn from leading academics that are developing research in their respected fields.

This course is for undergraduate students wishing to extend their knowledge and professional capacity in working with children and young people. It is also for professionals aiming to extend their knowledge through active-based research and specialise in a particular area of childhood and/or youth practice.

Semester 1
Transitions to Masters (10 credits)
Childhood and Youth in Context (30 credits)
Advanced Research Methods (20 credits)

Semester 2
Youth Justice: Rights, Protection & Practice (20 credits)
Advanced Research and Dissemination (60 credits)*
Practitioner Enquiry (40 credits)**
 

*You will study Advanced Research and Dissemination from September. However, the final assessment takes place in Semester 2.

**The Practitioner Enquiry recommends completing 70 hours of a professional placement in the children and/or youth sector. This can be undertaken in your current paid role or voluntarily with an appropriate organisation of your choice. We can support you in finding a placement but undertaking a placement is not mandatory when taking this module. In such cases, students will be supported via alternative arrangements and where necessary through alternative assessments.
 

Learning Methods

You’ll learn through lectures, tutorials, seminars, colloquiums, group work, reflective accounts and research. You’ll be assessed through research projects, presentations, blogs, diaries, posters and written essays/reports.

Progression Opportunities

You may already have a professional qualification in social work, teaching, youth work, early years or related fields and wish to specialise further in the field of childhood and youth studies. This MA presents an ideal opportunity for leaders, project managers, policy officers, and general practitioners to extend their knowledge and employment options in local, national and international settings that work for children and young people.

Entry Requirements

• Minimum 2:2 in a related BA (Hons) degree field (social science)
• GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English (as per industry requirements)
• Enhanced clear DBS – Disclosure Barring Service (for domestic placements only)
• In exceptional circumstances, you may be accepted on to the programme if you can demonstrate the ability to study at this level.
• Some experience in the vocational area of children and young people (paid or voluntary)
• If English is not the students first language they will need an IELTS score of 5.5 or above
• You will be required to submit two suitable references from either an employer or academic institution

Additional Course Costs

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2018 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at gov.uk/studentfinance or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
