Newcastle College to Host Exclusive Dance Event

Posted On 6th July 2018 By Charlotte Horsfield

Newcastle College is set to host an exciting series of opportunities for North East dancers and enthusiasts, as GRAHAM IN UK arrives in the region for the first time.

Organised by Eliot Smith Dance, in partnership with The Martha Graham Dance Company and in collaboration with Dance City and Great Exhibition of the North Inspired By, GRAHAM IN UK is a celebration of the life and work of American choreographer Martha Graham.

Devised by Artistic Director Eliot Smith, it intends to reintroduce Martha Graham’s work and techniques to British audiences and dance professionals, through an exploration of her influence on dance as an art form.

The week-long series, to be held at Newcastle College’s state-of-the-art Performance Academy, will feature a number of free public events, including discussion forums, a presentation on the history of Martha Graham and a dance photography event.

Masterclasses for both professional dancers and beginners will be held throughout the week at the College, offering the chance to learn techniques which have been taught to Martha Graham Dance alumni, which includes famous faces such as Madonna.

GRAHAM IN UK will conclude with a Gala Performance on 28 July at Newcastle College, celebrating the work created throughout the project and will include performances by Eliot Smith Dance and The Martha Graham Dance Company.

Eliot Smith says: “This is a game-changer moment when we will re-discover just how ground breaking, imaginative and innovative Martha Graham was and still can be.

“It presents a rare opportunity to revisit and revise perceptions of the Graham Technique re-establishing its significance and relevance. We will turn back the pages on Martha Graham and begin a new chapter on how Martha Graham influenced and can still influence contemporary dance in the UK”.

Janet Eilber, Artistic Director of Martha Graham Dance Company adds, “The Martha Graham Center has for decades focused on building relationships and partnerships in the arts and education with individual artists and organisations around the world.

“GRAHAM IN UK fits very well with our interests in sharing the Graham legacy and fostering all the ongoing art and research that it inspires in particular, with Martha Graham’s artistically rewarding associations with the UK. This platform I am sure will reunite and foster the lost connection and support future generations within the local and world-wide community.”
