Students at Newcastle College have helped hotel chain Jurys Inn celebrate its 10th anniversary in Newcastle by creating a four-tiered Genoese sponge cake that features the many weird and wonderful characters found in children’s favourite Alice in Wonderland.
Colin Cavanagh, 48 and from Dunston, joined forces with fellow Newcastle College student Belinda Miller, 43 and from Shiremoor, to make the cake, which featured at a celebration party at the Jurys Inn hotel at St James Gate, Scotswood Road, to mark the anniversary as well as the completion of a £1.5m refurbishment programme at the hotel.
There was no need for any ‘Eat Me’ labels at the event, with the cake’s multitude of textures and four types of icing ensuring that the 20 inch creation would have been pride of place at any Mad Hatter’s tea party.
Colin and Belinda’s design was chosen as part of a Newcastle College competition and took over 12 hours to make, with the pair applying a range of final finishing touches that included an edible Alice figurine and a burrowing white rabbit.
The pair, who are both studying a Level 3 Certificate in General Patisserie and Confectionery at Newcastle College, also run their own online cake making businesses, with Colin heading up Cav’s Cakes and Belinda running Velvet & Lace Cakes.
Colin said: “It was a pleasure to be able to help the hotel celebrate its anniversary by making such an imaginative and eye catching cake. With so many angles, layers and textures, it was certainly a challenge, but I think we pulled it off. Training at Newcastle College has certainly helped to develop both mine and Belinda’s cake making skills, as well as given us ideas about how to develop our respective businesses.”
Nigel Grant, Pastry Lecturer at Newcastle College, said: “The cake was absolutely amazing and had everyone talking at the Jurys Inn celebration party. It’s a testament to the talents of both cake makers, as well as the fantastic training facilities we have here at Newcastle College.”
