Beauty case study

Kelly Hellens - FdA Beauty Therapy and Spa Management

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?

I had already completed my Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Beauty at Newcastle College and I’d had friends that had gone on to study the Foundation Degree and really enjoyed it so I decided to progress straight on.

Did you have the opportunity to go on a work placement as part of your course/what skills did you gain as a result?

I worked once a week in The Treatment Rooms Salon for seven months as well as within The Retreat, the College's very own beauty salon and spa. The Retreat 100% prepared me for a real working environment and I had chance to use laser hair removal and skin scanner technologies. I don’t think I would have been confident enough to have even gone for the job at Transform without the experience at College. The facilities are excellent.

What was the highlight for you?

The fact that I got a job whilst still studying for my degree, I felt really privileged.

What did you think of student accommodation?

I am originally from the region, but staying in student accommodation really helped me to make friends that were also studying at the College.

Now that you’re employed, what does your role entail?

I work as an aesthetician at Transform performing laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation and thread vein removal as well as chemical peels and microdermabrasion. I really like the customer service and client interaction, but the best feeling is seeing the results of your work. Laser hair removal is probably the best for that!
