Science case study

 Tiffany Connor - FdSc Biotechnology

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
The Foundation Degree is part of my Higher Apprenticeship at Fujifilm. Newcastle College is the only provider in Newcastle to offer a Foundation Degree in Biotechnology which is closest to where I live.

What does your role entail at Fujifilm?
I work as a Production Technologist in the downstream department where I work part of a team which separates and purifies biomedical drugs ready for use in injections.

What do you enjoy most about the course?
I really enjoy the practical nature of my degree and the fact that I get to learn the scientific principles and then apply them in my day to day role at Fujifilm. Learning in small class sizes is also a big help as you really get to know the tutors.

Would you recommend the course?
Yes, definitely. It’s a really hands-on course and it’s helped me to not only develop my scientific knowledge but also my practical skills.

How would you describe the staff at the College?
They’re really helpful and easy to talk to. Their level of knowledge and expertise is really impressive so you know you’re learning from the best.

What has been your highlight of studying at Newcastle College?
We went on a trip to a brewery last year and looked at the processes involved in fermentation which I could relate to my job at Fujifilm. That was really helpful.

What are you plans after your course?
I’d like to go on to study a Top-Up degree and then progress within Fujifilm. There are lots of opportunities to move around so I hope to go into Research and Development.
