A Newcastle College University Centre (NCUC) graduate has embarked on a paid internship with a global record label that will help grow the North East’s music industry.
Kaitlin Robson, 21, recently graduated from NCUC with a degree in Popular Music Performance.
She is now working with Warner Music UK, which represents artists such as Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran, as well as Generator, a well-known talent development agency in Newcastle. Though she is based in Newcastle, Kaitlin spends three days every month at Warner Music's London headquarters, receiving mentorship from esteemed leaders within the music industry.
The opportunity is part of an ongoing partnership between Newcastle College University Centre and Generator, working together to address skills shortages across the arts sector in the North East.
“This feels like a golden ticket moment, a dream come true.” said Kaitlin.
“Starting my music degree was quite scary because I know it’s such a hard industry to get into, but now I get to work with people from one of the biggest music organisations in the world and find out what possibilities there are for me.”
Warner Music Group, which Warner Music UK sits under, is a leading global music company with a roster of acclaimed artists and a rich legacy spanning many decades. It is home to record labels such as Atlantic Records, Warner Records and 100 Elektra Music Group, who have helped stars like Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Cardi B and Coldplay shoot to global fame.
The internship, which began in August, is a full-time position, making it a fantastic opportunity for Kaitlin to kick-start her career. Promising to be an immersive experience, it provides hands-on learning and invaluable insights into the workings of the music industry.
Kaitlin is also working alongside Generator, which plays a crucial role in shaping the region’s creative landscape by offering various programmes that allow local talent to thrive. She is tasked with supporting Generator's various programmes, participating in local talent development initiatives, attending events, and assisting with social media activations.
The opportunity comes after a difficult period for Kaitlin, who almost dropped out of her degree so she could focus on supporting herself financially. Thanks to support from the University Centre she was able to graduate.
Kaitlin continued: “As a care leaver, I’ve always had to work full time alongside my studies which has affected my attendance. There were weeks when I didn’t have any money, but Newcastle College really stepped up to support me, especially my Learning Mentor Lorraine, who always had time for me.
“Being able to have that communication was so important. I felt heard and understood and I’m really grateful for that.
“I’ve had to fight so hard to get here but I genuinely believe in myself and am willing to work hard. I know this is an amazing opportunity and I’m really excited to get started and make the most of it!”
Kaitlin is set for a busy year. Alongside her full-time internship, she is also running her own business as a singing teacher and studying for a Masters in Creative and Cultural Industries Management.
Gemma Wynne, Head of Music and Performing Arts at Newcastle College, said: “Being part of this great partnership with Warner Music UK and Generator represents an incredible opportunity for Kaitlin and hopefully future graduates of Newcastle College University Centre. It underscores our commitment to collaborating with industry to provide real-world experiences that prepare our students for success after graduation.
“Most importantly, we want to ensure our students have opportunities available to them here in the North East – especially in industries such as the arts that often see many talented graduates leave the region to pursue their careers.
“This partnership represents a pivotal step towards realising the vision of a vibrant and sustainable music industry in the North East and I’m thrilled that one of our own graduates will play a central role thanks to this opportunity.
“We could not be more proud of Kaitlin. We know she will flourish in this role, so we can’t wait to follow her journey.”
