The independent panel of judges (with representatives from City & Guilds, Awarding Body QUALIFI, and the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA), said that the nomination for Newcastle College “strongly demonstrated how the team has excelled in developing and embedding competition skills within the curriculum to develop confidence, build on strengths and review weaknesses."

Scott Bullock, Principal of Newcastle College, said: “Our vision at Newcastle College is to develop the skills and talents of our students to succeed in modern enterprise and make a positive contribution to the prosperity of the North East. Apprenticeships and skills training are integral to the future of our workforce and competitions such as NCG Skills and WorldSkills allow our students to share their skills, knowledge and expertise, while enhancing their employability prospects."
WorldSkills is a global network of 80 countries each hosting competitions-based training, assessment and benchmarking for young people with the hope of competing at the biennial competition which brings together all countries.
Teaching and Learning Assessment (TLA) Coach Lindsay Gaskill also won the “Best Student Support for Learners with Skills” award. She said: “I feel so honoured to have been recognised in this way. I’m very proud to support students with skills development and with regional and WorldSkills competitions, so this is just the icing on the cake.”
The AHT conference provides an opportunity for professionals from the industry to share best practice and take part in professional development activities.
