A group of Newcastle College NUF Academy footballers experienced a moment they’ll never forget recently, as they stepped onto the hallowed turf of St. James’ Park for a full 11-a-side match.
The unforgettable fixture was made possible through the ongoing partnership between the Newcastle United Foundation and the Newcastle College NUF Academy Coaching course. The programme offers students a unique blend of academic and athletic development, simulating the life of a young professional footballer while equipping them with the skills and qualifications needed for a career in sports coaching.
Jonny Rees, Director of Curriculum, praised the event:
"It was a great morning for our students, and an entertaining game too—goals galore! This is the sort of experience that will stay with these lads forever. We are incredibly proud to work with the Newcastle United Foundation across a number of programmes, including our Football Academy. Seeing opportunities like this come to life is incredible for our students."
Head Coach Terry Mitchell echoed the sentiment, highlighting the students’ dedication:
"This was the opportunity of a lifetime for some of these lads. They work hard all year, attend every lesson and coaching session, and this is their reward—60 minutes on the pitch at the home of Newcastle United."
For many of the students, playing at St. James’ Park was the realisation of a lifelong dream, an experience that will inspire them as they continue their journey in sport and education.
