Newcastle College University Centre's partnership with Amazon UK, which began in 2021, has reached a significant milestone as the global brand’s first-ever Digital Design Apprentice has now graduated and into a full-time role.
Alessio Pesci, who completed his apprenticeship as part of the Amazon Fashion EU Softlines team, has now secured a full-time role as a Brand Designer for Amazon Fresh following three years of study and hands-on learning.
Originally from a fine art background, Alessio was working in hospitality when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to reassess his career. Exploring ways to return to design, he discovered apprenticeships as a route that combined practical experience with academic learning.
Alessio said: “I knew I wanted to change careers, but financially, a traditional degree wasn’t an option. When I found an apprenticeship with Amazon that also offered a degree through Newcastle College University Centre, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on, industry experience at a global brand while achieving a recognised qualification.”
"I was really drawn to Amazon’s clear progression system. They’re committed to developing talent, offering opportunities to move between teams and continue advancing in your career. During the interview, when they outlined the potential for an apprentice in my role, it really sealed the deal for me. I could see this was the kind of experience I wanted—one that would help me grow and reach my full potential."
Alessio embarked on NCUC’s Creative Digital Design Professional (Integrated Degree) Apprenticeship, which was the first of its kind to be launched in the UK. Created in collaboration with digital employers across the North East, including Digital Union and Sunderland Software City, the programme combines creative areas including typography and graphic design, branding and advertising, fine art and visual communication information and interaction design, photography, data visualisation and moving image.
Despite being a fully remote programme, the University Centre ensured strong communication and mentoring, giving Alessio the confidence and technical skills to thrive in a corporate design environment. On completion, he has not only bagged a full-time role with Amazon but has also earned an Honours Degree in Creative Digital Design.
His success highlights how Newcastle College University Centre is helping to create industry-first apprenticeship roles that open doors for students.
Jon Ridley, Principal of Newcastle College University Centre said: “Our strong partnerships with employers ensure our degrees equip learners with the real-world skills businesses are looking for. Apprenticeships open doors to incredible opportunities, and our students go on to work with globally recognised brands, proving that apprenticeships can take you anywhere.”
As he celebrates his graduation, Alessio is eager to encourage others to follow a similar path.
“I’d absolutely recommend an apprenticeship. Newcastle College University Centre isn’t just helping students – they’re working with global brands to shape new career opportunities that didn’t exist before.”
Newcastle College University Centre continues to work with industry leaders to create innovative apprenticeship pathways, giving students direct access to careers with top employers.
Through ambitious teaching, innovative courses and outstanding learning environments, NCG and all of its colleges aim to inspire excellence, spark curiosity and make a real impact on its learners and communities.
