Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprentice

Eleanor Gibson
26-year-old Eleanor Gibson is in the fourth and final year of her Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship with Newcastle College University Centre and CPI.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.
I’m a final year laboratory scientist degree apprentice. I work 4 days a week as an apprentice scientist at CPI and attend Newcastle College University Centre on day release to complete my degree studies.
I am part of the formulation team of CPI, based in Sedgefield, working on several varied research and development projects, from batteries to cosmetics. In my day to day working life no two days are the same. They can include working alongside expert scientists and engineers in the lab to deliver projects, writing scientific reports, travelling to conferences and external trainings, volunteering as a STEM ambassador at outreach programmes at local schools and much more.
Why did you choose Newcastle College for your apprenticeship?
Newcastle College was one of the few providers that offered in person lectures / day release. I really benefit from being able to come onto campus to be taught in person. Additionally, it’s nice to spend one day a week with other likeminded apprentices, you’re all taking similar journeys and it’s nice to have that support network.
How do you feel that your apprenticeship is benefitting / has benefitted you?
My apprenticeship has skyrocketed my confidence. I have had opportunities to present at national conferences including CHoPS (Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids) 2024 and The Faraday Institution Conference 2024, as well as events at Newcastle College including “Posters in Parliament”. I have spoken at. Each time I have presented at one of these events my nerves have got less and less and it’s nice to see just how much my confidence has grown over the course of my apprenticeship. Now I don’t even think twice about volunteering to present!
What do you enjoy the most about your apprenticeship?
I have had the opportunity to travel, work and meet with people from diverse backgrounds. Not only has this improved my professional performance, but I feel that learning about other cultures and their customs has benefitted me personally.
