Can you tell me a bit about your experience studying at Newcastle College?
I’ve been at Newcastle College for a few years now, and my experience has been really good. the standards here are really high and I’ve made great friends, which is so important when you come out of school. I’ve also learned a lot of skills, both for work and life, and I’ve matured a lot as well.
What kinds of advice and support have you received from your college tutors, support staff, or the apprenticeship team while studying your course?
I was off for seven months due to an injury, and when I came back, Tony Gallon in the workshop provided support, helping me catch up because I was behind by quite a bit.
Joe, Gill and Tony also assisted in getting me back on track with my progress. Additionally, Michael Johnson, the apprenticeship leader for Persimmon, offered extra support, which really helped me move forward. His assistance was invaluable in helping me pass, and I’m grateful for all the support I received.
How much would you say you have benefitted from learning from industry-experienced tutors at Newcastle College?
I think the biggest benefit is the environment itself. You’re treated more like an adult, which helps you mature within yourself. And it's about learning every single day, whether I'm in the workshop, the classroom, or even our specific learning spaces. That hands-on learning is preparing me for the real world

I’ve met people from all different backgrounds, and now they’re my friends for life. I’d say that the knowledge of the trade is something I’ll carry with me forever, along with the life skills I’ve gained from learning everyday.
What has been the highlight of your time studying at Newcastle College?
A highlight for me was when I competed in the City & Guilds bricklaying competition. It was different from just working in the workshop, and it really pushed me. It was a challenge, and I like a challenge.
What are your ambitions after you finish your course and further into the future?
My ambition is to finish my apprenticeship with a distinction. In the next five years, I want to become confident enough to either start my own bricklaying business or move up within a company like Persimmons.
