Software Developer Apprentice

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary: £22,000 – £25,000 per annum
Start Date: September 2026 (or earlier)
Duration: 3 years


About the Role

This is a fantastic opportunity to join MHT Technology as a Software Developer Degree Apprentice, gaining hands-on experience while working towards a fully funded degree.

As part of our three-year programme, you’ll develop practical software engineering skills while earning a salary and learning from some of the best engineers in the industry. You’ll gain exposure to multiple departments, contributing to real-world, multi-disciplinary projects with a focus on software development.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Developing coding and programming skills, producing high-quality code following best practices
  • Contributing to software development for research and development projects
  • Researching emerging technologies and evaluating their potential use
  • Testing software solutions on hardware and simulators
  • Participating in team and project meetings, contributing to design decisions
  • Debugging, refactoring, and improving code quality
  • Implementing changes to fix bugs and introduce new features
  • Working with databases and data connections
  • Supporting software testing to meet functional and non-functional requirements
  • Assisting with user interface design
  • Delivering secure, scalable software using modern development methodologies
  • Using industry-standard tools for version control, build, release, and deployment

Training & Qualification

You will complete a Level 6 Digital & Technology Solutions Professional Apprenticeship, leading to:

BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineer)

  • Delivered by Newcastle College (remote and in-person)
  • Typically one day per week during term time
  • Remaining time spent learning on the job with our experienced development team

Working Hours

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm
  • Flexible working available

About You

We’re looking for someone enthusiastic, curious, and eager to learn. You’ll ideally have:

  • A passion for coding and strong IT skills
  • Good organisational and time management abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving mindset
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools
  • Analytical and logical thinking skills
  • Ability to plan and manage your workload effectively

You will also be:

  • A strong communicator
  • A team player
  • Customer-focused, with a commitment to delivering high-quality work

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GCSEs (Grade 4–9 / C or above) in English, Maths, and a STEM subject
  • A Level (or equivalent) in a STEM subject

Desirable:

  • A Level in Computer Science or IT
  • Minimum of 96 UCAS points

Career Progression

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there is potential to progress into a Software Development Engineer role within MHT Technology.
