Students at Newcastle College have been putting their practical skills to the test during two days of hands-on fire safety training, gaining valuable experience that could support their future careers.
Level 3 Uniformed Public Services and Level 1 and 2 Sport students took part in the sessions, delivered by Simon Cataldo of Cataldo Training, who drew on his experience in the Fire Service to demonstrate essential fire safety techniques.
Students learned how to safely use fire blankets and CO₂ extinguishers in an emergency, before getting hands-on with fire hose training, supported by College colleagues.
The sessions gave students an opportunity to develop their confidence, teamwork and practical skills while learning more about the importance of fire safety in real-world situations.
David Day, Sport and Uniformed Public Services Lecturer at Newcastle College, said: “Giving our students opportunities to learn directly from industry professionals is an important part of what we do at Newcastle College.
“These sessions have been a fantastic way for students to develop practical skills, build confidence and gain experience that will support them as they progress towards their future careers.”
Simon Cataldo, from Cataldo Training, said: “The students at Newcastle College are amazing. I love working with the College and giving them the opportunity to enhance their skills.
“They’ve shown fantastic enthusiasm throughout the training, and it’s great to see them getting stuck in, building their confidence and learning skills that could make a real difference in the future.”
The training is another example of how Newcastle College brings industry experience into the classroom, helping students develop the practical skills and confidence they need for their future careers.
